David Karunda

Bio

David is a Sustainable cum Digital Development practitioner who works in the Policy and Advocacy team. He manages the stewardship of the Principles for Digital Development and co-facilitates the Africa Data Leadership Initiative in collaboration with the Smart Africa Secretariat and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa. These two initiatives respectively aim to support digital development stakeholders worldwide with principles-led resources and insights on the integration of digital technologies in development locally and globally, and strengthen the capacity of African countries in data governance policy and implementation.

He previously consulted for the International Development Research Centre where he led a team of African researchers in a foresight research study of the future of digital development up to 2035. He also worked in the Data Use Partnership at PATH with African countries to build their capacity in digital transformation and responsible data use in the delivery and management of health services and evidence-informed policymaking for health. Furthermore, he managed the Commonwealth Digital Transformation Programme and supported programmatic divisions with the integration of technology in their programs while working at the Commonwealth Secretariat in London. Additionally, he had collaborated with the Tanzanian Training Centre for International Health, Jhpiego, UNFPA and SolidarMed in design and rollout eLearning services and mHealth initiatives in rural Tanzania.

David believes in and advocates for inclusive, ethical, responsible and sustainable digital transformation and innovation towards a better digital age. He holds MSc in Sustainable Development from the University of Sussex and a BSc in ICT with Business Management from Mzumbe University.
