Today, DIAL published a Special Edition of our e-Newsletter. We do not know how long this crisis will last, but DIAL does have resources that can help with response; enhancing decision-making in order to improve health outcomes, bolster disaster preparedness, and prevent food shortages.

In other news, we welcome Nanjira Sambuli to DIAL’s Board. Nanjira is a wonderful addition to our team. Stay tuned to this blog for a Q&A with Nanjira on her passion for digital equality and where she hopes to see DIAL go in the future for more information.

Finally, DIAL welcomes USAID’s first-ever Digital Strategy, which the agency recently released which balances the benefits and risks digital technology introduces into the lives of people served around the globe. A “Special Edition” Newsletter from the Digital Impact Alliance

The world has changed drastically in the past several months as COVID-19 spreads around the globe. Governments, businesses, and the international community are grappling in real time with how to respond. Mobile phones generate enormous amounts of data every day and can be an incredibly important resource in developing a humanitarian response. When MNO data is combined with other types of data, such as satellite data and health data compiled by the government, we can produce valuable insights to help us deal with the COVID-19 pandemic.

DIAL has created a suite of resources to highlight key issues that governments and intermediaries should consider with regard to using MNO data as part of a country’s COVID-19 response. Access the resources here

Recently, USAID announced its first-ever Digital Strategy which balances the benefits and risks digital technology introduces into the lives of people served around the globe. This strategy builds on decades of experience to foster a deliberate and holistic commitment to improve development and humanitarian assistance through the power of digital technology. DIAL CEO Kate Wilson welcomes the strategy, saying:

“DIAL strongly supports the vision laid out in the first-ever USAID digital strategy. We believe that a country’s successful journey to self-reliance depends in large part on their successful use of digital technology and responsible use of data. USAID’s new strategy, grounded in the Principles for Digital Development, combines the extensive digital lessons from partner programming with the US’s digital technology leadership, so that people around the world can prosper. We look forward to working with USAID missions around the world to achieve their vision.”
