Today, countries across Africa are digitising their services, seeking to stimulate much-needed economic and social growth. However, while digital transformation has many benefits, in some cases, it has caused marginalised and socially excluded groups to face an increased risk of being left further behind. In this piece, we highlight the experiences of Khalid and Sayid, two member of stateless communities. Their stories are part of a series of articles highlighting people’s lived experiences of digital transformation, which are intended to provide insights into how data and digital technology are impacting people and communities across Africa.

Every day, scores of women navigate Accra’s bustling marketplaces in the hopes of making enough money to provide for their families. They are the foundation of Ghana’s unofficial (informal) economy. In this piece, we sat down with several of these women to learn how digital transformation is affecting their lives and livelihoods, both positively and negatively.

In just the past five years, over 100 million individuals have been issued a digital ID using the Modular Open Source Identity Platform (MOSIP). Built as a digital public good (DPG), MOSIP is being implemented in countries as diverse as Ethiopia and the Philippines. This case study outlines the factors that led to the rapid adoption of MOSIP and the lessons that other DPGs can derive from its success.

As of the end of 2023, some 14 million Ukrainians had fled their homes since the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022—5.1 million internally and 6.2 million throughout Europe. This represents the largest human displacement crisis in the world today. While there is no silver lining to a crisis of this scale and depth, this paper attempts to understand one factor that is contributing to Ukraine’s resilience in a time of war and supporting enormous numbers of displaced individuals in their efforts to resume normal life: citizens’ ability to easily access their identity certificates, education credentials, health care records, and financial support through the government’s online citizen portal.

In the age of digital connections, traditional IDs are no longer sufficient. As we celebrate Identity Day, we advocate for secure, equitable, and trusted digital ID systems, paving the way for a confident and inclusive future
